There was only one person Enishi could call family when he was only a boy, and that was his older sister Tomoe. Both Enishi's parents weren't around while he was growing up; his mother died giving birth to him and his father shortly left thereafter, leaving Tomoe to raise her brother all by herself. The two lived a rather peaceful life until Tomoe became engaged to a samurai named Akira Kiyosato. Enishi quickly rejected the fact that his sister be in love with another man, fearing that he wouldn't be paid attention to, but until he saw how much she cared for Kiyosato, he accepted the facts. However, Kiyosato was assassinated one night by Battousai Hitokiri, causing Tomoe to fall into a deep depression.

Tomoe had joined a ninja clan known as the Yaminobu to get revenge on her boyfriend's assassin, but strangely enough, ended up falling in love with the man soon to be known as Kenshin. Enishi later followed his sister and enlisted in the same group under Tomoe's nose, though, unknown of his sister's new love. Although he played no major role in the Yaminobu, Enishi was trained slightly by the clan's leader, Tatsumi. He was prepared to do battle with Battousai if the time had come, but fell into a state of chaos after witnessing the death of his sister at the hands of the Hitokiri first-hand.

From that point on, Enishi's emotions grew unstable. Devestated by his sister's death, not only did his hair change from black to white, but Enishi also he fled to Shanghai, China. Living a cruel life on the streets was not easy for a boy of his age. Enishi did what he can to survive, even if it meant eating corpses and drinking mud. One fortunate day, however, Enishi was seen by a Japanese couple who were having an extended stay in Shanghai to study Chinese books and was taken in by them. Yet, he showed no appreciation. Instead of thanking them, Enishi slaughtered the entire family. His reason was because he couldn't stand to see such happiness before him.

While in Shanghai, Enishi self-taught himself the art of Watoujutsu and rised to the top of the black market there with the assistance of the money his adopted family had. Working in cooperation with Wu Hei Shin, Enishi supplied arms to those in need of them. The most notable customer of Enishi's has to be Makoto Shishio, who had purchased the Rengoku battleship for his Kuni Tori.

Years later, Enishi returned to Japan and formed a group of so-called 'comrades' with the same common goal, to kill Battousai. Enishi had started his Jinchuu campaign by first attacking locations that Kenshin frequented, then set a date for an all out battle at the Dojo Kamiya. Although he got to face the man who killed his sister, defeating Kenshin was not Enishi's true goal. What he really wanted to do was make Kenshin suffer like he had after losing his sister, so he had kidnapped Kaoru, the one closest to him, and left a dummy marked with a cross-scar made by Gein that looked as though she had been killed by Enishi's Tachi, causing Kenshin to fall into an extremely deep state of depression.

No matter how much he wanted to, Enishi just couldn't kill Kaoru after taking her to his hideaway island on the west bank of the Arakawa River. Everytime he looked at Kaoru, he saw the image of his sister. When it was learned that Kaoru was still alive, Enishi's location was discovered and he was forced to face Kenshin for a second time. Even though he pushed his body and skills to the limit, Enishi lost after the image of his sister that he always had seen as smiling down upon him no longer did so once Kenshin convinced him that the life he was living is one that has not made Tomoe truly happy.

In conclusion, Enishi was arrested, but escaped shortly after. He had jumped overboard and swam away, back to Tokyo, with only the clothes on his back and the diary of his sister given to him by Kenshin before he was taken away. He had wound up at the Rakuninmura where he had met his father for the first time in years, though, it is not known if the man known as Oibore revealed his true self to his son.

There is a unique thing Enishi possesses, and that is something called the Nerves of Insanity. Once irritated, nerves bulge out all over Enishi's body, increasing all of his power, speed, and senses. Enishi claims that this special feature of his body is a gift granted to him by his sister, but really, it is something generated by all of the anger and frustration built up inside of him.
