The mechanical artist Gein has skills that were used only a long time ago by a very small number of individuals. His fascination with corpses and other decaying objects allows him to be a master of creating what he calls "puppets". His most notable creation is named Iwanbou, who was at one time a member of Makoto Shishio's Juppon Gatana, later modified two more times. Yet, the corpse of Kaoru he made to deceive Kenshin and throw him into a deep state of depression is what Gein is most proud of. Behind the mask, however, lies an old man. There was only one person to see Gein's true identity, and that was Aoshi.

When Shishio was defeated, Gein left the Juppon Gatana and was entrusted with the duties of bringing together the four others who would contribute to the Jinchuu campaign by Enishi, who he was really working with. Although he helped Enishi, Gein had no personal grudge with Kenshin like the rest of his comrades; he simply wanted to test his creations out. He was the only one with Enishi to avoid being arrested after the battle at the Dojo Kamiya, yet, after that, Gein wanted nothing to do with the man he had been working under for quite some time. Enishi had let him go, but Gein knew that there was a catch to his freedom being so easily handed to him. He was set up by Wu Hei Shin, the number two of Enishi's organization. They had thought they had gotten rid of Gein for good by outnumbering him on his ferry back to Tokyo with a bunch of assassins, but the masked man revealed that he was also skilled with his bare hands.

Once he returned to Tokyo, he searched a graveyard for the "corpse" of Kaoru he had created, but didn't find it. Instead, he encountered Aoshi. The two dueled for some time, and eventually, it had become Gein's final battle. He had set himself up when he ignited a fire that was meant to engulf his opponent in its flames. Aoshi outsmarted the masked man and yanked him into the blaze he created. The only thing that remained of the man known as Gein after that was his skull mask.

It may not look like it, but Gein is very strong since a lot of physical strength is required to handle his mechanical puppets. On one hand he has diamond-edge wire on his fingertips and can manipulate them in any way he wants. The wires themselves are sturdy because they have the power to lift up even some of the heaviest of objects. Steel wires soaked in oil are also used by Gein, only to trap his prey.
