Having the ability to fly with his synthetic bat-like wings, Hen'ya is a well-respected member of the Juppon Gatana. His origin is unknown, but he is feared in combat due to his aerial strategy. Since he has the advantage of flight, Hen'ya can swoop down at his prey down below and slash them with the blade attached to his right arm or bombard it with the many explosives he has equipped on him. Because of this, Hen'ya is very cocky. He always underestimates a challenge put forth. In the end, his foolishness costed him his battle with Yahiko.
Hen'ya was arrested at the Aoiya, where he was defeated, and was given an opportunity to work for the Meiji Government because of his unique abilities. He was offered the position in the army as an overhead lookout of the Asian continent, which he ended up accepting.
