During the Tokugawa Era, Kaichu was the shogun's adviser and he is one of the few (if not the only) that the shogun really trusts. Supposedly, during the Meiji Restoration, the shogun had given Kaichu a portion of his wealth and he had hidden this wealth so that the shogun may use it someday during the time of peace. However, due to the presence of the government, Kaichu could not make a move. Furthermore, it was supposedly Kaichu who had advised the shogun to surrender in the first place so that no more blood will be shed. In the end, a group called the Beni Aoi was formed in order for Kaichu to hand over the shogun's wealth in order to pay for his crimes. Due to the Kenshin Gumi's intervention, Kaichu and his family were saved.
