Kanryu Takeda is a big-time drug dealer. Nearly everyone in Tokyo has heard of him, some even cower at it. No one dares mess with Kanryu unless they are strong enough to take on his entire army, consisting of many thugs, but mainly, the Oniwabanshu. Even his men fear Kanryu because if they fail him, they are killed. The main drug Kanryu sells is opium, which is created by his golden egg laying goose, Megumi Takani.

Alone, Kanryu is nothing. With money comes power. Kanryu was able to force Megumi into making drugs for him when she had learned the technique, since the doctor she was training under originally made the opium for him. His alliance with the Oniwabanshu lasted for a bit, but crumbled when Kenshin got involved.

Overall, Kanryu is a cocky invidual who longs for money and power. The drug dealing business he's in is only a small task compared to his black market arms dealing business. Kanryu purchases weapons such as the infamous gatling gun and sells them at high prices. However, all of Kanryu's power-hungry dreams were shattered when he and his gatling gun were defeated by Kenshin. Kanryu was thrown into jail, charged for numerous things, after killing all of the Oniwabanshu "employed" under him except Aoshi Shinomori.
