When Shinta Himura was sold to the slave traders after his parents had died from a cholera epidemic, he was befriended three young women, Akane, Kasumi and Sakura, all of whom were "supposedly" sisters who were also sold as slaves to the group. These sisters became the refuge and support of Shinta. However, when bandits attacked their group, the three sisters placed themselves inbetween the young Shinta and the merciless people, shielding the boy with their own bodies and not letting him see the carnage. They had also prevented Shinta from being killed because the young boy had attempted to use a katana to defend the remaining survivors although he did not know how to wield one.

Right before they were killed, they had told Shinta "to live life". That was when Hiko showed up to rescue the boy who would one day be called Kenshin. When Kenshin was talking with Kaoru in Seisou Hen, he told her that he owed his life to the three sisters who sacrificed themselves for his sake and that, after his trip to China, he would like to be called Shinta once again.
