Before he became a wandering rurouni, Kenshin was a young boy named Shinta. Shinta's parents died when he was around the age of eight in a cholera epidemic. A year later, Shinta was bought by slave traders, who were soon attacked and killed by a group of bandits. The young boy's life was saved by his soon-to-be master, Seijuurou Hiko.
The name Kenshin was given to Shinta by Hiko, feeling as though Shinta was too weak of a name for someone who was about to learn such an exclusive style of the sword. Kenshin trained in Hiko's art, Hiten Mitsurugi Ryuu, for less than a decade. By time he reached his teenage years, after witnessing the countless deaths from the battles between the Meiji Government and renegades of the Tokugawa Era, Kenshin felt the need to save people's lives and bring about change. His way of thinking not only led him to tick Hiko off, something his master would never forget, and leave his training undone, but led him to become what he's most famous for, taking on the name 'Battousai'.
Battousai worked for the Choushou Clan led by Kogorou Katsura. His skills as a hitokiri were so great, it made him the most feared hitman in Japan. He killed people, mainly tyrants of the Tokugawa Government, in order to create a world where people can live without fear. One night, he had killed a man named Akira Kiyosato, boyfriend of Tomoe Yukishiro, who happened to be caught in the struggle when Battousai was given the orders to carry out the assassination of Jubei Shigekura. In this conflict, Battousai was scratched for the very first time after taking up his role as a hitokiri by Kiyosato on the cheek. The assassination of Kiyosato led to a series of events, where Kenshin finally ended up falling in love with the woman who's boyfriend he killed.
Unfortunately, Battousai was trying to be killed off by those who supported the current government. In a battle, Tomoe was killed along with Battousai's opponent. Given to him by the woman he fell in love with was another scar on his cheek, which created the cross scar Kenshin would carry around for quite some time.
After falling into a slight depression, Battousai was called to return to battlefield after months of hiding by Kogorou himself. Dozens of battles were fought, and leading the way was Battousai, still fighting for the goals he had wanted to see acheived from the beginning. Over a little more time, the Tokugawa Government fell and gave rise to the new Meiji Government. Battousai then disappeared into the shadows.
Battousai had become a rurouni, traveling under his original name, atoning for the sins he comitted as a promise to Tomoe. He vowed never to kill again with a sword, thus wielding a Sakabatou, a reversed bladed sword, a gift to him forged by the legendary blacksmith Shakku Arai. The legend of the man that helped create the Meiji Government is well known. One day, while walking through the streets of Tokyo, he had encountered Kaoru Kamiya, whom he later married and even had a son with. It was time the ruoruni to stop traveling. Kenshin had not intended to do so, but he stayed in Tokyo with Kaoru at her Dojo Kamiya to help bring revive the good name of the Kamiya Kasshin Ryuu. Friendships were forged, most importantly with Yahiko Miyoujin and Sanosuke Sagara. Every so often, people tried to challenge Kenshin, aware that he was the Battousai Hitokiri, to prove their worth. The only person so possessed to defeat Kenshin was Aoshi Shinomori.
Not only has Kenshin halted petty crimes and saved people's lives, but he even saved the Meiji Government from being taken over by Makoto Shishio. Kenshin has that personality where he meets a person, then immediately makes friends with them. For a man that was once Japan's best assassin, Kenshin is very kind and understanding. Whenever a loved one, or in fact, anyone, is in danger, that is the only time Kenshin gets serious. At times, the hitokiri side of the rurouni would show. Jin'e Udou and Hajime Saitou were the only two that were able to bring out Kenshin's dark side, but Kenshin learned how to prevent himself from reverting after overcoming Shishio.
Sooner or later, the past would come to haunt Kenshin. Enishi Yukishiro, the brother of Tomoe, returned to Japan after many years to get his revenge on the man who killed his sister. Enishi created a group of fighters that all shared the same hatred as himself. The task of carrying out 'Jinchuu' was at hand. Because of Enishi's haneous plan and Gein's trickery, Kenshin fell into a state of depression, but soon got out of it once he learned that he still had to fight for just causes as long as he can wield his sword. A resolution was reached once Kenshin defeating Enishi with the Amakakeru Ryuu no Hirameki, Hiten Mitsurugi Ryuu's succession technique.
The cross-scar of Kenshin's lasted as a memory of the Bakumatsu for the majority of time. It did not begin to fade away until he had defeated Enishi. With the past slowly becoming nothing more than memories, Kenshin passed on his sword and ideals to Yahiko, who would keep the two until the day Kenji, Kenshin and Kaoru's son, would reach the age of understanding the principals of true strength.
