Shikijou previously worked as a ninja for the side of Satsuma. In 1866, the first decisive battle, he was a spy on the Edo Castle, but was found out and defeated by Aoshi, thirteen years old at the time. Aoshi had given Shikijou a chance, seeing that he had much potential in the Oniwabanshu. Without much of a choice, Shikijou joined Aoshi and strengthened himself, earning the numerous bulging muscles on his body.

Most likely, the scars of Shikijou's body were given to him by Aoshi in their fight. Ever since he joined the Oniwabanshu, Shikijou was considered a traitor, but he served Aoshi loyally. Not only is Shikijou skilled with an iron ball and chain, but he is powerful using any part of his body. His loyalty to Aoshi was proven when hundreds of Oniwabanshu members split up to find new lives and even more when he had jumped in the way of Kanryu's gatling gun to save Aoshi's life.
